be of value to men aiming at the Chinese Administrative

Services.

Most of the English teaching in the University

being of a utilitarian character, the Committee recommend

the institution of honours courses in English literature

and of an experimental honours course in the comparative

study of English and Chinese literature.

The Committee also recommend the institution of

refresher courses for Chinese teachers in Hong Kong and

South China, and of compulsory courses in Chinese for under-

graduates following professional courses.

As regards Education, which is henceforth to be

a post-graduate diploma course, the Committee are strongly

of the opinion that special emphasis should be upon the

technique of English teaching to Chinese, since the train-

ing of teachers of English is one of the most valuable

services that the University can do for China. Admission

should be offered as freely as possible to graduates of

Chinese Universities who intend to become teachers of

English in China.

All the above recommendations have been referred

by the Council to the Senate for consideration and report.

Removal of Students' Financial difficulties.

One of the obstacles which impede the coming of

students to Hong Kong from the interior of China is the

much higher cost of living in Hong Kong. If therefore
